This altar painting from the refectory of the Sant’Antonio monastery in Ferrara depicts a Crucifixion scene with the Virgin Mary, St John, Mary Magdalene clinging to the cross, and four flying angels. The city of Jerusalem in shown at the end of a winding path in the background. Adam’s skull lies in the foreground at the foot of the Cross; Christ’s blood flowing over the skull is a symbol of redemption.
