Shortly after Bertrand’s birth, his parents moved to Boulevard Maurice Barrès in Neuilly. He lived there until the German occupation, when he went to join his father in Pau. They were arrested while attempting to cross into Spain, and interned in Drancy. Bertrand, his father and sister were deported to Auschwitz on November 20, 1943, on convoy 62.
