These purely decorative blue-painted metal vases set in a gilt bronze tripod mount were crowned by a pineapple that seemed to spring from amidst leaves. They were what was known as a garniture, a term designating objects such as vases, candelabra and statuettes placed in pairs on the mantelpiece or on chests of drawers or console tables.
