The Park at Ermenonville

The Park at Ermenonville
CLAUDE LOUIS CHÂTELET (1753-1794)
Paris, circa 1778
oil on canvas
In the foreground of this view of the park at Ermenonville, Jean-Jacques Rousseau is being greeted by a group of people.
The park is landscaped “in the English style,” as a garden with a variety of buildings intended to surprise the walker with its picturesque views.
On the right, the Temple of Philosophy, in the middle background, the island with poplar trees where the philosopher was buried until his remains were interred in the Panthéon on 11 October 1794.
