Venus and Cupid
JEAN-BAPTISTE-MARIE PIERRE (1714-1789)
before 1764
oil on canvas, sculpted and gilt oak frame
Jean-Baptiste-Marie Pierre was appointed the king’s official painter in 1770. A history painter, he depicted both religious and mythological subjects. This picture is inspired by a painting by Boucher, Venus Disarming Cupid, commissioned by Madame de Pompadour, perhaps for the Château de Bellevue, in 1751 and now in the Château de Fontainebleau.
