The gallery on the ground floor of Château de Villeneuve-Lembron is decorated with remarkable gothic inscriptions and murals. They include a portrayal of an astrologist, wearing a bonnet and robe and holding forth at a lectern surmounted by a sphere. His words, written on the unfurled scroll above him, tell us that a man who lives reasonably and reflects on passing time, is happier at home than the great who live at court:
Home vivant selon raison.Considère le temps qui court.Est plus heureulx en sa maisonQue les grans qui vivent en cour
There is also a portrayal of Rigault d’Oureille himself, seated in a throne-like chair and wearing the cap fashionable during the reign of Louis XII. His thoughts, inscribed next to him, warn his descendants against the vagaries of life at court and exhort the virtues of prudence and loyalty:
