As a building contractor, Giraud de Talairac did not enjoy the same status or fame as architects, who were regarded as artists. Yet although never in the limelight, builders and engineers played a key role in Paris’s urban development. Talairac had acquired some renown for building the city’s tallest house in rue Radziwill, a nine-storey building with a spectacular double staircase leading to a famous gambling den.
