Cité Radieuse - Le Corbusier - Marseille

Commissioned in 1945 and built between 1947 and 1952 by Le Corbusier, the l’Unité d’Habitation in Marseille is one of the masterpieces of modern architecture of the 20^th century. This “Cité Radieuse” created for the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urbanism, was developed to respond to Post-War social needs. In fact it contains 337 apartments of 23 different types ranging from small accommodation for single people to family homes. Designed in reinforced concrete, the building is erected on piles, and includes a roof terrace, shops, spaces dedicated to leisure and a kindergarten. This building, which promotes well-being and community living, is endowed with domestic comfort that is optimised by its interior furnishings, combining formal harmony and decompartmentalization of volumes, but also the functionality and space saving character, as is the case with the built-in kitchen, created in association with Charlotte Perriand.
