Rococo ornamentation is essentially irregular and fanciful. It was inspired by the picturesque irregularities of nature or by the artist’s imagination. The sea world, especially shells (which were enthusiastically collected at the time), could “inspire architects, sculptors and even painters with new ideas for forms,” according to the art dealer and expert Edme-François Gersaint (1736).
