Created in 1953 by Pierre Belvès, one of the most famous illustrators of the Albums du Père Castor, and François Mathey, curator of the museums, “the workshop for children under thirteen” was the first experiment of this kind in a cultural institution. It was such a success that the workshops were extended to teenagers and adults and took the name of Ateliers du Carrousel in 1989-1990.
True to their original aim of “stimulating individual creativity through contact with materials, objects and works”, the Ateliers du Carrousel, thanks to the quality and commitment of the team of professional artists who teach there, take over 1,700 pupils each year: children from four up, teenagers and adults.
