This painting and its companion piece, “The Porte Saint-Denis,” depict two of the famous monumental archways that were erected at the main entrances to Paris by Louis XIV. A century later, their classical-style architecture made them popular with painters of views of the French capital – especially Hubert Robert, who gave them the grandeur of ancient Roman monuments.
