In 1962, Jean Dubuffet began the series L’Hourloupe, a name that he borrowed from an illustrated book of drawings made with ballpoint pen, and it lasted until 1974. This new graphic style comprised of cellular forms with simple colours interlocking like a puzzle reigned supreme over his drawings, paintings and sculpted painted panels. From 1966, Dubuffet adapted it for large sculptures and monuments with complex forms, or for habitable architectural structures.
