Pierre Legrain, the decorator, bookbinder, cabinetmaker and illustrator, is a major figure of Art Déco who worked for Jacques Doucet among others.
This chair with geometric decoration is greatly influenced by Cubism, but also by African furniture that was often shown at temporary exhibitions, such as the “Exposition de l’Art indigène des colonies françaises” (“Exhibition of Indigenous Art of the French Colonies”) at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in 1923. It was exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Décorateurs in 1924.
