Unclassifiable sculptors seen as one artist by the public, the couple Claude (1925-2019) and François-Xavier (1927-2008) Lalanne are famous for using flora and fauna as the basis to their work. After meeting in 1952, they developed two distinct but complementary works. With an innovative use of materials, they have the same sense of humour and a non-conformist approach. Playing with art hierarchy, they give their sculptures new uses, and their pieces of furniture, jewellery and silverware are inspired by nature.
The Musée des Arts Décoratifs owns a major group of works thanks to the dation made in 2021, and also to the generosity of several sponsors, amongst whom Gregory and Regina Annenberg Weingarten.
Their work has attracted important collectors such as Pierre Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent, and has enjoyed unprecedented popularity over the last twenty years.
