Through the series Terra Incognita, Anette Lenz raises questions about the reproduction and dissemination of images. The first poster in the series, Terra Incognita (White) was intended only to be looked at, since no single viewpoint could create a valid reproduction. The impossibility of reproduction raises questions about how the image is disseminated, or, more precisely, about its non-dissemination, thus interrogating our relationship with the circulation of images. The image of this crumpled piece of paper evokes a mountainous landscape similar to the virgin lands around the poles. On this subject, Anette Lenz writes : “Is it a coincidence that the last lands explored on the globe are the poles, which are precisely those which have never contained color. Look ! On geographical maps, too, there were white zones marked in impeccable Latin with the words terra incognita, all in capitals.”
The poster System Error. Restart features an excerpt from a computer error message. Through this image, Anette Lenz evokes all systemic errors – political, ecological, human – and suggests a reboot.
